Witty and stylish in the classic Dashiell Hammett tradition, Michael Murphy’s latest high-flying Jake & Laura mystery features a Hawaiian honeymoon that’s interrupted when their friend Amelia Earhart is accused of murder.

Hawaii, 1935. Mystery novelist Jake Donovan and actress Laura Wilson are in gorgeous sun-soaked Hawaii, but their best-laid plans for canoodling on the beach are interrupted by a summons from famed aviatrix Amelia Earhart. It seems a local businessman has been gunned down next to her plane. In just days, the famous pilot intends to fly from Honolulu to Los Angeles, making aviation history over the Pacific. But now, without Jake and Laura’s help, Earhart’s flight might never take off.

Trailing a killer, the newlyweds’ sleuthing leads to a jealous pilot, a cigar-chomping female officer of the “Royalist Militia,” and a notoriously disagreeable lieutenant colonel named Patton. With a sinister killer lurking in the shadows, it’s safe to say the honeymoon is over . . . and the danger has just begun.

His use of real people in the story is and the suspense is just right.
I couldn't out it down.
I'll admit it. Because I've worked as a forensic death investigator for the last twenty years, finding good mysteries is a difficult task. I'm not a big fan of the hyper-realistic procedurals because I find them dull (once again, I do that stuff for a living). But so many of the other 'crime thrillers' out there just seem to lack personality. There protagonists are often faceless and unmemorable. Cardboard cutouts. They often exchange 'mystery' for 'gruesome', especially if it's a serial killer book. I'm just not a big fan.

However, I'm also a hopeless romantic who believes the next great mystery is out there somewhere. Truth is, I love mystery. It's why I got into my line of work to begin with. So yeah, I'm constantly on the look out for new talent that I can sink my teeth into. Michael Murphy and Wings in the Dark definitely propels my hope in the future of great mysteries with a perfect blend of rich, memorable characters and intriguing whodunnits. Simply put, Wings in the Dark had everything I look for in a great mystery.

Yes, it is easy to see Murphy was influenced heavily by Dashiell Hammett's The Thin Man series, but that's just what makes it even better. It's a journey back to those simpler times when pesky things like forensics was still in its infancy. When real men wore fedoras and the dame down the street is just as likely to shoot you as she is to kiss you. And you can't argue with the fact that Murphy developed a wonderful chemistry between the two leads, Jake and Laura Donovan. They are simply brilliant together. Jake is the rough-around-the edges gumshoe, who's as brilliant as he is tough. But Laura, who is equally as tough, is not only brilliant, but charmingly disarming. As a team, they are a perfect pair.

The mystery itself was wrought with plot twists and red herrings. Yes, I did solve it before the conclusion, but I had my doubts. But that's what makes a great piece of mystery fiction! A reader SHOULD be able to figure it out. They should be able to sift through all the clues, analyze and deduce until they can solve the case right alongside the detective. Too often, writers of mystery fiction is so concerned about the twists and turns, that they fail to lay out real clues that can really solve the whodunnit. Murphy pulled this off splendidly.

Needless to say, I'll be reading the rest of the Jake and Laura Mysteries as quick as I can.
Wings in the Dark had me on the edge of my seat—with beautiful, smooth writing; a gripping plot; characters we know and love; and a murder mystery that kept me guessing until the very last page!

Wings in the Dark—like its lead characters, Jake and Laura—has the perfect blend of smoothness and sophistication, coupled with raw, gritty, smarts. Michael Murphy has created a mystery that is at once exciting and smooth—like Jake Donovan himself.

Well done! Highly recommended for fans of mystery, intrigue, romance, and great writing!
Reading Wings in the Dark was quite like watching films from a simpler time which was probably intentional. The story takes place in 1937 as Amelia Earhart prepares for her trans Pacific flight, and it is a murder mystery with a film noir feel. Neither Michael Murphy's writing nor his story is terribly sophisticated but there's something charming about it that made me keep picking it up and kept me absorbed all the way through. In the end, it is a lightweight fluff of a book, but one you won't mind having spent time with.
I love Michael's Jake & Laura mysteries! This one, which goes into pre-WWII intrigue with Amelia Earhart and hints of Japanese imperialism, is set in Hawaii. Michael, as always, does an amazing job of taking us into time and place, letting us bicycle around Hawaii with our favorite actress and her detective-turned-writer beau. The story is fun, the characters engaging, and the mystery clues are well laid. And then there are Jake and Laura themselves! If there are two more likable protagonists in today's cozy mystery genre, I don't know about them. Wings in the Dark is a just a downright fun flight to take.
Over the past year and a half, Phoenix-based mystery writer Michael Murphy and his publisher, Alibi (a division of Random House), have issued three novels in Michael's Jake & Laura mystery series. I've read them all, and I gladly recommend them to you.

The latest, Wings in the Dark, incorporates all the elements that make these books such fun - exciting locations, colorful characters (including a few drawn from the pages of history), snappy dialogue, and mysteries worthy of the name.

Each novel is written from the point of view of Jake Donovan, a former private eye turned mystery writer. He's done well with a series of novels about Blackie Doyle. By the time we get to novel three, he's also persuaded the love of his life, Broadway actress and movie star Laura Wilson, to marry him. Their trip to Hawaii in 1935 was meant to be their honeymoon, but as always seems to happen to Jake, he gets pulled into a murder investigation. This time, the victim is a local businessman who's helping to bankroll Amelia Earhart's historic flight from Hawaii to the U.S. mainland.

Jake has supposedly given up sleuthing, but his work moves the case along farther and faster than anything done by the Hawaiian police. Laura's okay with Jake's involvement for two reasons. She's a bit of an amateur detective herself. More important, if the case isn't solved, her friend Amelia could be the killer's next victim, and Amelia's history-making flight will never occur.

There are plenty of suspects - Hawaiian royalists, who resent the growing prominence and power of the U.S. in the islands; the Japanese government, who believes America is building a Pacific empire that must be stopped; Amelia's female mechanic, who has aviation aspirations of her own; the victim's brother, who got short shrift in the family will; and a few more.

Amelia and her husband, publisher George Putnam, play prominent roles in the book. George Patton also makes a few appearances, and his proximity to a successful close to the case just might have contributed to his promotion from colonel to general!

If you're a fan of Nick and Nora Charles, you'll enjoy Michael's work. The fourth book in the series, The Big Brush-Off, will be published next February. Do yourself a favor. Read the first three between now and then, and you'll be salivating for the next book.
