Give 'Em The Ax A A Fair Earle Stanley Gardner 9781258205232 Books
Erle Stanley Gardner is, of course, most famous for his Perry Mason series. He did, however, publish thirty novels in the Cool and Lam private eye series, twenty nine of them between 1939 and 1970, and next month The Knife Slipped, a lost novel. It's a terrific series featuring the original odd couple pairing of Bertha Lam, greedy, overweight, given to yelling and screaming, with the slight person of Donald Lam, clever, and almost Holmes-like in his powers of seductive reasoning. Lam is more of your typical Hardboiled detective and Cool is almost there for comic relief. This particular novel has Lam returning from Navy duty, although still suffering from tropical illnesses. A most unusual, but sensous, client appears and they take on a convoluted case involving a club for afternoon affairs, a lovesick secretary, a cigarette girl with legs that just went on forever, an axe murderer, an awful fender bender, and a suspicious police detective.
This is a quick and easy read and skillfully combines Hardboiled pulp detective fiction with lighter detective fare.
As of the writing of this review, only three novels of the Cool and Lam series are available as ebooks with a fourth being released next week. I would really like to see the whole series in eformat, but for now this series, written under the name AA Fair, is only found among the used paperback stacks.

Give 'Em The Ax A A Fair Earle Stanley Gardner 9781258205232 Books Reviews
I love the Cool and Lam series. I wish more of them were digitized. They're so much fun to read.
Release Stanley Gardner wrote better as A.A.Fair than he did as himself. While I enjoy the Perry Mason books, Donald Lam has much better and believable personality.
After Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler (GOD 1.0 and GOD 2.0) I think Gardner's novels written as AA Fair are the slickest stuff ever. Gardner as Fair is the MOST underrated and fun canon in the world. Every novel he wrote with that name is great.
The Cool & Lam series is great fun, but this review is about the publisher of the e-book. The copy editing leaves much to be desired. Throughout the book - even on the same page - a character named Crail is written as both Crail and Grail. Punctuation is sometimes missing, as well. The book really needed a good copy editor. If you can look past those annoyances, it's good, but it distracts me from reading.
A wonderful story! I could not put it down! The plot was complex and kept the excitement at a high pitch! I didn't know who was the villain tell the end.
Bertha Cool and Donald Lam are in a private detective partnership. B. Cool is large, in charge and greedy. Lam is an "X" lawyer, who makes simple cases complicated. Lam cleverly makes money for the agency, while solving the cases and making Cool "nuts"! All of the 29 books in the series, written under the pen name A. A. Fair, are fabulously good. The plots are ingenious, suspenseful and amusing.
Lam and Cool pick up a relatively interesting domestic relations case and it soon branches into blackmail and murder. The police, here honest as My Tragg, doggedly follow clues that lead them to Lam but you know that he is putting the facts together that will reveal the unexpected criminal.. Hardboiled, more so than the Mason novels, and very entertaining. There is also a great scene where Cool gets cross-examined by a sharp lawyer during a deposition.
